Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This tends to be one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may rank among your greatest worries. On the inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what have I gleaned? It’s always advisable to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not completely ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist in connecting with others. Additionally, I learned that being authentic is crucial. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some instances, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in managing this emotion, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same experience. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly ensure others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize and keep in touch with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being! My key takeaway from this dimension of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and how to find enjoyment in spite of pressures like examinations and due dates.
