Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was comfortable with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating tasks was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might be among your primary concerns. On my first day moving into the dorms, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day avoiding social interactions in my room, too scared to step out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve encountered at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I take away? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be abundant ice-breaker events and activities to facilitate your connection with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more considerable jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee that others are experiencing the same thing. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are dedicated to your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They connect with us and keep open channels of communication throughout the year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized that resource earlier. I talked about taking leaps before – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. One can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has confirmed that I am never isolated and has helped me learn how to find joy in my experience despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
