By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I realize the year has been filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your top concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before the semester started, I spent the whole day retreating into my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I glean? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking sessions and events to assist you in connecting with your peers. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge I faced was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some instances, an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Adjusting to such an atmosphere is not always easy on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally lost. Therefore, seeking assistance is crucial. This might be the most vital lesson to carry into your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our struggles throughout the year. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty members, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this part of university is to leverage the support you’re provided. You can never have too much help!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the various support avenues available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and has shown me how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
