Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, right before the semester began, I stayed in my room all day, feeling too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve found some of my closest friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which started with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what lesson did I learn? It’s advisable to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Furthermore, be true to yourself. Given the multitude of diverse individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter kindred spirits.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and an even more considerable leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and begin to question your own abilities. What assisted me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and staff!
This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize the difficulties students face. They show empathy and maintain an open line of communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized them sooner. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and this is one of the best things you can do for your personal growth! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
