Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year rich in personal growth, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment! However, what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your greatest anxieties. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room due to feeling too apprehensive to venture out and greet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life, both here at this university and within this program. I have established a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with fellow students in similar situations. So, what lesson did I take away? I discovered that taking a leap at the year’s onset is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate interaction with others. I also realized that if you can embrace one thing, it should be your true self. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you will undoubtedly encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle I needed to address was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. However, several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If you’re struggling to understand something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also don’t comprehend it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I did take a significant step at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. Holding this position allowed me to connect with faculty members, a tremendously beneficial endeavor. There are many pathways to familiarize yourself with staff, and this is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your personal growth! My primary insight from this facet of university life is to embrace the support available to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!
Overall, this year has highlighted that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently irrational and can be alleviated by the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment even amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
