Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As a first-year student on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering, stepping into the unknown was far from what my typically shy and reserved self was used to. Now, upon reflection, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what lessons have I learned this year, and what is my current state?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your major worries. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes began, I sequestered myself in my room all day, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently declare that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiated by casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re feeling uneasy or unprepared, fret not! Numerous icebreaker activities will facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it’s best to simply be yourself. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a notable increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Navigating such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A couple of things aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re puzzled by a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek guidance from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one at the year’s onset by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
