Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was alien to my formerly timid and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most significant hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university can often be one of the most daunting, and if you are a potential student reading this, it may be a leading concern for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever encountered at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all stemming from initiating brief chats with people in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I glean? I realized that taking a chance at the onset of the year is crucial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking activities will facilitate your connections with others. I also discovered that authenticity is vital. Given the diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to meet those with whom you connect.

A further obstacle was the complexity of the workload and course material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and arguably, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in this regard, one of which was the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle with a topic, it’s highly likely that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had done so sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I ventured into one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build connections with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this part of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. There’s never too much help!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
