Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where am I positioned now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and mingle. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, it’s okay! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of individuals across the course and university, you’ll inevitably find those who align with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and even more drastically from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and question your own skills. What assisted me through this was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that others are facing the same issue. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

On the subject of staff, the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want students to thrive and recognize the challenges we encounter. They show understanding and keep consistent communication regarding our worries. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had earlier. I spoke of taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position provided me the opportunity to connect with faculty members, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the supportive resources offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
