Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not typical for my previously reserved self. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what knowledge have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating tasks was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university can often be one of the most frightening elements, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my moving-in day a few days prior to the start of term, I stayed in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which started with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what has this taught me? It’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you interact with others. Also, if there’s one thing to be, be genuine. With such a variety of people in the course and at the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was definitely noticeable, and an even more substantial jump occurred from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less competent. A helpful reminder for me was that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty for help!
This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They are understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our challenges. I didn’t use the pastoral support until the year’s end but wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps— I did so by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff, which is invaluable. There are many opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for your personal growth! My key takeaway is to take full advantage of the support available. There’s no such thing as too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and throughout university, are often misplaced and can be eased with the assistance available from staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I am never alone and learned how to enjoy my experience despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
