Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future as I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into this new experience was not something my formerly introverted and quiet self was familiar with. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This can undoubtedly be one of the more stressful elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your leading concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, daunted by the notion of venturing out and introducing myself to my peers. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve established some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve come to understand that it’s always beneficial to take a plunge at the start of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that if you can embrace one quality, it should be authenticity. The course and university host a diverse range of individuals; you are sure to find others like yourself.

Another challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that there are at least a few others who are also confused. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face hurdles. They show empathy towards students and engage in ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year concluded, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is certainly one of the most positive actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are generally unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never solitary, and it has instructed me on how to find enjoyment amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
