By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. I wasn’t accustomed to embracing new experiences, but reflecting on the year, it was replete with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial hurdles was forming friendships, which can be overwhelming for newcomers. On my first day in residence, I remained in my room, too apprehensive to meet others. Now, I have cultivated some remarkable friendships here, establishing a second family at Imperial. I’ve discovered that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready, there are ice-breaker events available to facilitate introductions. Just be yourself, and you’ll encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content, which escalated from A-levels and increased from the first to the second term. It’s easy to lose confidence, but keep in mind that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Seek assistance from peers and faculty; it’s vital during your first year.

The faculty in Materials are encouraging and acknowledge the struggles of students. They engage with us regarding our concerns. Although I didn’t utilize pastoral support until later, I wish I had reached out earlier. I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which helped me bond with the faculty. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s advantageous. Make the most of the support provided; you can never have an excess of help!

This year has shown me that apprehensions about university life are often baseless and can be alleviated through support from both staff and classmates. I’ve learned that I am never alone and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
