Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing tasks was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating challenges of commencing university, and if you’re here as a prospective student, it may rank as one of your foremost concerns. On the day I arrived at my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the thought of venturing out and introducing myself to others. Yet today, I can proudly assert that I have formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with engaging in casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I realized that taking a leap early in the year is crucial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to encourage interaction with others. I also discovered that above all, it’s important to be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge encountered was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a significant transition from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me in overcoming that sentiment was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others do as well. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek help. This may be the single most essential lesson to adopt in your first year. Seek assistance from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your personal growth! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
Overall, this year has made me realize that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone, and it’s shown me how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
