Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Plunging in headfirst was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize it has been a year rich in personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! So, what lessons have I taken away from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the more intimidating aspects of beginning university, and if you find yourself reading this as a future student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and greet anyone. However, sitting here now, I can assertively state that I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I have established a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what’s the takeaway? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take that initial plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t quite feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate interaction with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are bound to encounter peers akin to yourself.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experiences. If you find something bewildering, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are just as puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to acquire in your first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support system until later in the year, but I wish I had begun earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role gave me the chance to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it is unquestionably one of the more rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. One can never have an excess of support!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always irrational and can be alleviated through the numerous support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has guided me on how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
