Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about the future ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly state that I have formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s essential to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not yet ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. Furthermore, if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded individuals.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can take a toll on your confidence; observing others study may lead you to feel insufficient. What aided me was the acknowledgment that everyone shares similar experiences. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. So, seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Request help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety surrounding university are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and how to find joy in the midst of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
