Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid self was used to. In retrospect, I recognize a year packed with personal development, trials, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks high on the list of worries for new university students, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may also be weighing on your mind. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and interact with others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve created some of the most wonderful friendships during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with fellow students in similar positions. What did I discover? It’s vital to take that leap at the start of the year. If you’re not yet prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ice-breaker events designed to help you mingle with others. Additionally, be authentic. With a multitude of diverse individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct escalation from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can shake your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Keep in mind, everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, others likely are, too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!
The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They keep us informed about our concerns throughout the academic year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously—I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me to get acquainted with the faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and this is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never receive too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings about university are often unwarranted and can be eased with the support provided by both staff and students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone and how to enjoy my time despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
