Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I experienced a mix of nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! What insights has this year provided me, and where do I stand now?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days prior to the term’s beginning, I remained in my room the whole day, too scared to go outside and meet others. Currently, I am proud to say that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversations with others in the same position. What did I discover? It’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can shake your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me was recalling that everyone shares similar feelings. If you struggle with something, chances are others are too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and instructors!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing dialogues with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with staff, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson is to capitalize on the resources available. You can never have excessive support!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be reduced with the support available from staff and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even with challenges such as exams and deadlines.
