By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a new first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved persona was used to. Looking back over the past year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles faced, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is often one of the most daunting, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some incredible friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? It’s always advantageous to take a risk at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you are struggling with something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are committed to your success and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and maintain continual communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year was almost over, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are many ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, whether before or during university, are often unwarranted and can be alleviated with the support systems provided by staff and peers. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and have learned to enjoy myself despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
