Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I faced was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it might be a major apprehension for you. On the day I moved into my accommodations, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day isolating in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was some casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be abundant opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate interaction with others. I also realized that if you can embrace one thing, it should be authenticity. With the diversity of individuals across the course and university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; observing others study might contribute to feelings of inadequacy. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly assure you that others do as well. Hence, do seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the staff!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and acknowledge that students face challenges. They are empathetic and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive services until the latter part of the year, but I wished I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps—I did take one at the onset of the year by serving as a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunity with the support being provided. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has imparted the understanding that feelings of nerves, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased by the extensive support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has guided me on how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
