By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Now, reflecting on this past year, I can see a journey of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect is often one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into dorms, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and connect with anyone. Today, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends during my time at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take that initial plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With the array of individuals present in the course and university, you’re sure to connect with like-minded people.

Another obstacle I encountered was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. It was undoubtedly a leap from A-level studies, and in certain aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a demanding environment can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel that you’re falling short. A few strategies assisted me through those moments, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, seek assistance. This might constitute the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and faculty!

This brings me to my next topic. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and maintain continuous dialogue with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so much earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the outset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s among the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both pre-university and during it, are generally unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
