Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, apprehensive, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered this year, and what is my current state?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your major worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term started, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with some casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I take away from this? I figured out that it’s always advantageous to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to discover peers like you.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a marked increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always foster confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less than capable. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is in the same situation. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be one of the most crucial lessons to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to seize the support that is available to you. One can never have too much help!

In conclusion, this year has demonstrated that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are almost always unwarranted and can be eased with the various support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
