Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly among the more daunting facets of starting university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your top concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever encountered at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with fellow students in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some regards, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be a blow to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are grappling with it as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for support!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking risks previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the support you are provided. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the various support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has shown me how to relish my experience amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
