Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often stands out as one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an aspiring student, it may be a significant worry for you. On the initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that remaining true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re bound to meet like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the intensity and complexity of the coursework. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What benefited me was reminding myself that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want students to thrive and recognize the challenges we encounter. They show understanding and keep the lines of communication open regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps—I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary message is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the support accessible from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone, and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
