Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current perspective?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and meet others. Nevertheless, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in light conversation with peers facing similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who share your traits.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was unquestionably a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me combat that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same experience. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that there are others who also find it unclear. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They are empathetic to students’ situations and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My key takeaway from this dimension of university life is to utilize the assistance available. You can never receive too much!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the extensive support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to embrace enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
