Back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Taking such a significant leap was far from what my formerly shy self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a journey of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can often be one of the most frightening elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the semester kickoff, I spent the whole day confined to my room, feeling too overwhelmed to venture out and connect with others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve found some of the best companions here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual chats with others in the same boat. So, what was my takeaway? It’s crucial to take that initial leap at the year’s outset. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaker events will facilitate your interactions with others. Also, embrace your true self. With the diverse population within the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded souls.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the subject matter. There was a notable increase from A-levels, and even more distinction between the first and the second term. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others diligently studying and feel less competent. What aided me was recalling that we’re all navigating the same waters. If you’re puzzled by something, it’s likely others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are amazing. They genuinely desire for you to excel and comprehend the challenges students endure. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I talked about taking leaps – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your personal growth! My central message is to make the most of the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety about university often lack basis and can be eased with the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never isolated, and I’ve discovered how to relish my experience, despite the stresses of exams and deadlines.
