Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I faced a wave of anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my once-timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day in my housing, just days before classes commenced, I isolated myself in my room, too fearful to go out and meet others. Presently, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those experiencing similar situations. What have I learned? It’s essential to take risks at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, do not fret! Numerous ice-breaker events will facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With such a variety of individuals at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase compared to A-levels, especially from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you might feel less capable in comparison to your peers. What benefited me was the realization that everyone shares similar challenges. If something is confusing, it’s likely that others find it challenging too. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most important lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and instructors!

This transitions to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely want students to thrive and understand the difficulties we face. They are compassionate and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our worries. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with the staff, which is truly priceless. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support that is available. You can never have too much of it!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety before university is often baseless and can be alleviated with the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve figured out that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
