Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year brought me, and what is my current position?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and for any prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and make introductions. However, today, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate interactions with others. I also realized that staying true to yourself is crucial. With such a wide array of people across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of content. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can shake your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are puzzled too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate during the first year. Reach out for assistance from fellow students and staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They sympathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t completely take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned making leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues for building relationships with staff, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are typically baseless and can be mitigated with the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
