Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Leaping into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more formidable parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your major worries. On my inaugural day moving into my dorm, a few days ahead of the term start, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this experience? I’ve learned that it’s always best to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, I learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is grappling with the same issues. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee there are others who feel the same. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding toward students and keep open lines of communication with us all year regarding our struggles. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are countless opportunities to interact with faculty, and it’s undeniably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support you receive. There’s no such thing as too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has illuminated how to find joy amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
