By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future as I got ready to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This aspect is usually one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too intimidated to go out and meet people. Now, I can proudly say I’ve discovered some of the best friends I’ve ever known at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals facing similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that taking an initiative at the outset of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With so many diverse individuals around the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was the workload along with the difficulty of the content. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you might notice your peers studying and feel inadequate. What supported me during this time was the reminder that everyone is facing the same situation. If you struggle to grasp something, chances are others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson for the first year. Reach out to your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I referred to taking initiatives before – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the support available. You can never have an excess!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be diminished with the assistance available from staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
