Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyable moments! But what have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forming friendships. This is definitely one of the more intimidating parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term commencing, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. As I sit here today, I can proudly say I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what has been my takeaway? I’ve learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events available to encourage you to interact with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to connect with like-minded people.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more significant transition from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always a boost to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me through that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something confuses you, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling with it too. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really tap into the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking initiatives – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key lesson from this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the support that is available to you. You can never have an excess of it!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be mitigated with the wealth of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone, and it has revealed how to relish my time even in the midst of stressors like exams and deadlines.
