Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved persona was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what’s my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be your chief concern. On the day I moved into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. What did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With an array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to meet people who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the workload and the level of difficulty of the content. There was undeniably a significant leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may represent the single most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and the staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to achieve and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest actions you can take for yourself! My key insight from this dimension of university is to seize the assistance offered to you. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has demonstrated that anxious feelings, both prior to and throughout university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
