Approximately ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. The prospect of diving into the unknown was foreign to my previously shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most daunting when commencing university, and if you are a future student reading this, it may rank among your primary worries. On my initial day settling into my living space, just days ahead of the semester beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I could have ever hoped for here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversation with others experiencing similar situations. So, what lesson did I glean? I realized that taking a bold step at the year’s outset can always be advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or feeling at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you establish connections. I also discovered that being your authentic self is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap between the first and second terms. Being thrown into such an environment can challenge your confidence; seeing others study may leave you feeling inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear, I can almost guarantee that others share the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most significant lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask peers and staff for help!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This role enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support available. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be dissipated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
