Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unknown wasn’t something my previously reserved and timid self was used to. Upon reflection, I recognize a year enriched with personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and where have I ended up?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university is undoubtedly one of the most intimidating, and for those reading this as future students, it might rank as your foremost concern. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve had at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it only required some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I discovered that it’s always wise to take that initial leap when the year begins. If you’re not feeling entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking chances and gatherings to facilitate your interactions with others. I also learned that if you can embody one principle, let it be authenticity. With a diverse range of individuals in the course and university, you’re likely to connect with those who share your mindset.
Another obstacle I had to face was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in particular, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment doesn’t always bolster confidence; you may observe others studying and feel like you fall short. A few strategies aided me during those times, one being the realization that everyone is encountering similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost assure you that at least a handful of others are too. Thus, seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask peers and staff for help!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students can face challenges. They are sympathetic to students’ difficulties and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took a significant one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most productive actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support you’re offered. You can never have too much help!
In a broader context, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated through the extensive support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and how to harmonize enjoyment with the pressures of exams and deadlines.
