Back in October 2022, a mere ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the cusp of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year full of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gathered, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This definitely ranks among the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an aspiring student, it might be among your top worries. On my first day of moving into my dorm, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day remaining in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always wise to take a plunge at the commencement of the school year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can be one thing, be genuine. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

A further challenge was coping with the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who also do not. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties students encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned before about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to build relationships with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to indulge in enjoyable experiences alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
