Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of entering university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day relocating to my residence, a few days prior to the start of the semester, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assuredly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what wisdom did I gain? I learned that it’s always wise to take a leap at the year’s beginning. If you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals like you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel deficient. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If something eludes your understanding, I can nearly assure you that others are baffled too. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and keep us informed throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered. You can never have too much help!

In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated with the extensive support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to relish my time while managing sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
