By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I geared up to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved personality was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I see a time rich with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it might be one of your main worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet, sitting here now, I can assertively state that I’ve made some wonderful friends during my time at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual chats with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking occasions and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, be genuine. With such a diverse range of people in the course and university, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects aided me in overcoming that sensation, one of which was the assurance that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost guarantee that others are confused as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t truly engage with the pastoral support until the year was drawing to a close, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the outset of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this facet of university life is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
