Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and unsure regarding the future as I geared up to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for new university students. On my first day settling into accommodation, I remained in my room the entire time, too daunted to socialize. Now, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all commencing with brief conversations with individuals in comparable situations. I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is advantageous. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! Many ice-breaker activities are available to assist in connecting with others. Be authentic, and you’ll encounter like-minded individuals.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It can impact your confidence, but keep in mind, everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, others probably don’t either. Seek assistance from peers and staff; this is vital during the first year.

The faculty in Materials are amazing. They desire for you to thrive and comprehend student difficulties. They engage with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated my connection with the staff. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can pursue. Leverage the support provided; you can never have too much!

This year has shown me that anxious feelings about university are often baseless and can be soothed with the backing available from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never alone and learned how to find joy despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
