Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, afraid, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved demeanor was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most daunting hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of embarking on university life, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may be one of your major worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I discovered that taking a leap at the year’s beginning is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, it’s perfectly alright! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to connect with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the challenge of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others share the same confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with staff, and it is definitely one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the available assistance. You can never have too much of it!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the diverse support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
