Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year rich in personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and for prospective students, it may be a top concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, daunted by the thought of stepping out and introducing myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with others in the same position. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s always beneficial to take a plunge at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be abundant opportunities for ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with your peers. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re guaranteed to find kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the awareness that everyone shares similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost promise there are others who are equally confused. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for support from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely wish for you to excel and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication about our concerns throughout the academic year. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had acted on it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a wellbeing representative. This role facilitated my connection with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has made it clear that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be mitigated with the support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never solitary and how to enjoy myself even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
