Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something the previously reserved version of myself was used to. Looking back over the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I remained in my room the entire day, too nervous to go out and meet new people. Now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in like circumstances. What’s my takeaway? It’s essential to take that leap at the year’s start. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There are numerous icebreakers and gatherings to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is vital. With such a wide range of individuals within the course and the university, you are bound to encounter those who connect with you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can shake your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear, others likely share the same confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges confronted by students. They empathize and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are many methods to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My primary lesson is to utilize the assistance available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the anxious thoughts preceding and during university are often baseless and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has taught me how to enjoy myself amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
