Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you are viewing this as a potential student, it may be one of your major worries. On the first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all started with engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I come to realize? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events that will assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you are sure to find people similar to you.
An additional obstacle was the workload and complexity of the content. There was indeed a significant shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for one’s self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel as though you’re inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one of which was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee there are at least a few others who also do not understand. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They are empathetic to students’ concerns and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit! My main lesson from this facet of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of it!
In general, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the plethora of support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
