Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back on this past year, I recognize a time of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be one of your major worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with people in similar scenarios. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that if you should be anything, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to find peers like you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in navigating that sensation, one being the assurance that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that others might not understand it either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They are committed to your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are plenty of opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s undeniably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support offered to you. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
