Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly among the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re looking at this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On the initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I have made some of the most wonderful friends I have ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I learned that it’s always best to take a plunge at the start of the year. If you’re not feeling entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to facilitate engagement with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. There exists a vast array of personalities across the program and the university; you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was distinctly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always simple for your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same position. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly assure you there are several others who share the same confusion. So, seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to embrace in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year concluded, but I regret not engaging with it earlier. I talked about taking leaps earlier – I indeed took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to meet staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for your well-being! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never have too much help!
Generally speaking, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the abundance of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has illuminated that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
