Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was an experience my formerly shy and reserved self was not used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This represents one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can assertively state that I have forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in small conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, make it being yourself. With such a variety of individuals within the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another challenge was coping with the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might see others studying and feel less capable. A few factors aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also share that confusion. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are sympathetic to students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I embarked on one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to build relationships with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key insight from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. There’s no such thing as too much support!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
