Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was a challenging experience for my previously shy and reserved self. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a period filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This undoubtedly represents one of the more daunting facets of starting university, and for any prospective students reading this, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve experienced at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all originated from engaging in light conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what’s the lesson? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be abundant ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. Among the plethora of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge involved balancing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant increase compared to A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can really impact your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same predicament. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are feeling the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff within Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier the importance of taking leaps – I jumped in at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the most valuable actions you can undertake for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
