Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I geared up to initiate my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something I was used to, given my previously timid nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, trials, and enjoyment. So, what have I taken away from this experience, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often a significant worry for newcomers to university. On my initial day at my accommodation, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to meet anyone new. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, simply through engaging in light conversations with others in similar situations. I learned that making a move at the beginning of the year pays off. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. Be authentic, and you’ll find like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the workload and complexity of the content. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even steeper one from the first to the second term. This can significantly impact your confidence, especially when you see peers studying and feel inadequate. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something seems unclear, chances are others are struggling with it too. Therefore, seek assistance. This is vital during your first year. Reach out to both peers and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize student challenges. They keep in touch with us throughout the year. I didn’t make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I took a plunge at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative, which helped me connect with the faculty. There are various opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s among the best decisions you can make. Take full advantage of the assistance available; there’s no such thing as too much!

This year has shown me that anxious feelings regarding university are often baseless and can be eased with support from faculty and fellow students. I learned that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
