Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, frightened, and unsure of what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving headfirst into this experience wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the year, I recognize a stretch filled with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is certainly among the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before the semester began, I spent an entire day cloistered in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can affirmatively say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, all it took was some light conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a leap early in the academic year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, I discovered that if you can embody anything, be yourself. There are numerous diverse individuals across the program and the university; you’re surely bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge I needed to conquer was the intensity of the workload and the sophistication of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is navigating the same challenges as you. If you’re struggling to grasp something, there’s a high likelihood that several others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by volunteering as a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much support!
In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated with the extensive support options available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
