Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re considering this as a future student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day settling into my dormitory, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all stemmed from engaging in casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what had I come to understand? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can be any one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

A further challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can often shake your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you’re perplexed by something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Ask your classmates and the staff for help!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to students’ challenges and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had availed myself of it sooner. I mentioned taking risks at the beginning; I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the opportunity for the assistance that is provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the myriad of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am not alone and how to find joy even when faced with stressors like exams and deadlines.
