Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reticent self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights did this past year provide, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into student housing, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and interact with others. However, today I can proudly state that I have forged some of the best friendships I have ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be abundant ice-breakers to facilitate connections with others. I also found out that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse array of people throughout the program and university, you’re certain to encounter those who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less competent. A few things aided me in overcoming this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to acquire in the first year. Ask for assistance from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the hardships that students encounter. They empathize with students and consistently maintain communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unjustified and can be diminished with the plentiful support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and how to find enjoyment despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
