Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the road ahead. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in Materials Science and Engineering. Engaging with the unfamiliar was something my traditionally shy and withdrawn self found challenging. Looking back, I realize it’s been a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current state?
One of the early and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of entering university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your top anxieties. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, several days ahead of the semester, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and greet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assertively declare that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known during my time at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous opportunities and events to help you connect with fellow students. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse range of individuals in the course and the university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was surely a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you that there are others equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support available until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I noted the importance of taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely advantageous. There are myriad ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best choices you can make for your personal growth! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the assistance that is available to you. You can never have an excess!
Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are generally baseless and can be mitigated with the abundant support options provided by staff and peers. It has taught me that I am never on my own, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
