Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my upcoming journey as a first-year student in Materials Science and Engineering. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I can see a path enriched with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This certainly represents one of the more frightening elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it could be among your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the full day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, no need for concern! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your vibe.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this emotion, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same situation. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want to see you thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I made one by becoming a well-being representative at the year’s outset. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous pathways to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your well-being! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has elucidated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
